iPhone 3G coming to Best Buy next month
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Corporate News, Handhelds,
If lining up at the Apple Store or AT&T Store isn’t your thing, and you are still in need of an iPhone 3G, you may be interested to know that, beginning next month, you can instead join the crowd outside of your local Best Buy in the morning. Well, if yours is one of the 18 Best Buy Mobile locations in the US.
It appears that on September 7th, all the word that Best Buy went into coaxing AT&T and Apple into allowing them to be the exclusive third-party distributor of the iPhone 3G will have paid off. Don’t expect any price breaks (or increases), as they will be selling the phone for the same $199 and $299 (if you qualify) price point that you will find in the first-party stores.
Hopefully this is a sign that there will be more to go around?

Beats by Dr. Dre unboxing gallery
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Accessories, Features, Galleries, Portable Audio,
We’ve been following the Beats by Dr. Dre headphones ever since we first got some hands-on (and ears-on) time with them back at CES. The Gear Live group that got to try them out included a few serious audiophiles, and we were thoroughly impressed by the sound that they were putting out, and this is when they were still in the development phase.
We just got a pair of the final production model, and early indications are that they are full of a bit more awesome than they were back then. We will hit you with a proper review soon, but for now, we wanted to get you a nice Beats unboxing gallery, chock full of unboxing shots. We’ve got over 30 images for you to chew on while you wait for these bad boys to launch on July 25th. If you want them, you will find them exclusively in Apple Stores and Best Buy, as well as over at BeatsByDre.com. They will run you $349.95, $50 less than they were announced for back at CES.
Also, in case you missed it, check out our Beats by Dr. Dre unboxing video.

Future Shop Gives Credit for HD DVDs
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Movies,
Future Shop is offering $100.00 for your HD DVD player, but this deal comes with a catch. Between March 7 and April 3, you must use that credit on either a Samsung or LS Blu-ray/HD DVD Combo Player. They will also accept those from other retailers in addition to those from its parent company, Best Buy. Considering that Blu-ray players average around $500.00, you might want to hold on to your present one until you have more of a choice and better price point.
Circuit City, not to be outdone, will give store credit for HD players that were purchased in the past ninety days.

Apple is Second in Music Sales
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Apple, Corporate News, Music,
Apple must be positively giddy at hearing the news that the iTunes Store is now the #2 retailer of music, second only to Wally World. The company claims that it sold 20 million tunes on Christmas Day alone. Based on an NPD Group survey, the top four also included Best Buy and Target. The study also concluded that about 29 million consumers, ages 36 to 50, acquired music legally. They were those that had recently purchased (or received) MP3 players. That was an increase of 5 mill over the year before. That’s a lot of assuaged guilt.

TV Converter Boxes Are Now Available
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: HDTV, Home Entertainment, Misc. Tech,
Wal-Mart has announced that they now have OTA (over the air) analog to digital converter boxes for sale. The Magnavox STB will set you back $49.87. If you remembered to send for your $40.00 coupon from the NTIA early, which should be arriving soon, that’s quite a savings. We also learned last week that Best Buy will be offering an Insignia converter box retailing at $59.99, beginning February 17, and will also accept the coupons.

Best Buy To Emphasize Blu-ray
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Editorial, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Movies,
Round two. In a “no surprise” move (since Netflix is doing the same), Best Buy said that it will recommend that its customers choose Blu-ray when purchasing a DVD Player/Recorder.
“Because we believe that Blu-ray is fast emerging as that single format, we have decided to focus on Blu-ray products,” said President and CEO Brian Dunn.
You will notice the hardware and software change by March, although they will also carry HD products. We suspect you will find them in the mark down aisle and, while you are there, check out the bargain DVDs.

Best Buy Removes Analog TV From Shelves
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Home Entertainment, Misc. Tech,
Just so they won’t get caught with useless stock in February, 2009, the wily Best Buy has announced that they will no longer sell analog TVs. They are also taking those existing sets off the shelf that are not digital. Senior VP of Electronics Mike Vitelli said, “We are committed to helping people understand the digital television transition, and exiting the analog video business is one way we can help avoid confusion.”
We were thinking that the company will undoubtedly be selling ATCS tuners for those who still have analog TV, so wouldn’t it have been a smarter move to sell the existing sets as a package deal and double the sales?

Xbox Live Free For Three Days During Halo Launch
Posted by Paul Hamilton Categories: Xbox 360, Xbox Live,
In the midst of all the hype about the Halo 3 launch, one thing that is often overlooked is that not everyone who has a 360 is necessarily equipped to play the game in its entirety. Whether you’re staunchly against paying for an online service like Xbox Live or you just can’t afford it, for a few days at least it won’t matter.
Best Buy is sponsoring a three-day free-for-all granting all Xbox 360 users access to the Gold Service starting on September 25th and ending on the 27th. That means that Silver members get to experience Halo’s online multiplayer without charge for at least a handful of days after they pick up their copy of the game. Even if you’re not into the whole Halo thing, that doesn’t exclude you from taking advantage: Best Buy’s “the first hit is free” style promotion extends to all parts of the service so those without full access to Live could use the time to play some Gears of War online, check out the Call of Duty 4 beta (if it’s still up and running) or just use the time to play some free Uno.

Playing Geometry Wars and Halo 2 On A Best Buy Building
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Xbox 360,
As confusing as the headline is, that is exactly what we did outside of the Bellevue Best Buy. My boy Jason hooked up a projector and Xbox to a spare car battery, and we had an instant time killer on the outer wall of the store. The sleeper hit of the evening was Geometry Wars, followed by Halo 2 and Fusion Frenzy (Sumo and “Jump Duck” reigned.) We witnessed several near-collisions by those driving through the parking lot who had to grab a peek at the gigantic gaming set up. We have a couple more images after the jump.
